Opis:
The Wantage Mummers perform their annual play in the market square for the crowds of people on Boxing Day. Mummers' plays are folk plays performed by troupes of amateur actors, traditionally all male, known as mummers or guisers. Historically, mummers' plays consisted of informal groups of costumed community members that visited from house to house on various holidays. The word Mummer can be traced back to ancient Greece. It is derived from Momus, the personification of satire and mockery. It's also found in an old English word mommer, which relates to miming, masking and frolicking. The Wantage Mummers play has been performed since the early seventies and is a typical mid-Berkshire/Oxfordshire mummer's play of the hero-combat type, based on traditions from the villages around Wantage, like Steventon in Oxfordshire, Credit:Geoffrey Swaine / Avalon
