Picture MUST credit: Nanyang Technological University Scientists have developed a factory production line for turning cockroaches onto search and rescue robots. This prototype system is set to revolutionise the process of creating insect-hybrid robots. It turns the attachment of miniature electronic backpacks onto Madagascar hissing cockroaches into a quick and easy process. The cyborg insect factory is described as "a convergence of nature and machine” , opening up a myriad of possibilities for future applications in various industries. The system has been developed by a team at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. One of the main proposed uses for cyborg cockroaches is searching for survivors trapped under rubble at disaster sites. A remote-control camera-equipped cockroach could squeeze through otherwise-impassable gaps in the debris, transmitting live images and the coordinates of any survivors it comes across. It is envisioned that large groups of the insects would need to be deployed. In order to make such technology practical and feasible, the cockroaches need to be quickly created using an automated process. Picture supplied by JLPPA
