Picture MUST credit: FlyNow Aviation A short haul personal electric helicopter has shown off a new prototype taking to the air untethered. The coaxial twin-rotor eCopter is being designed to offer one-and two-passenger versions of the aircraft as an about-town flying taxi , along with a cargo model. All three will share the same base airframe again keeping costs down. Austria-based Air-mobility FlyNow Aviation hopes to start using the pilotless aircraft for commercial cargo operations in 2027. The air raft is not autonomous but instead is labelled automatic. Automatic flying means that the aircraft flies along a fixed route and its respective flight path follows a flight plan. Once the eCopter has clocked up more than a million kilometres, passenger flights are expected to follow. When a taxi service is up and running the company says an inner-city flight should cost no more than a normal taxi ride in a car on the same route. FlyNow was founded in 2019 with the idea of making a vertical take-off and landing multi-rotor for short cross-city flights. Each rotor is driven by its own electric motor, which in turn consists of four independent units. Should one of the motor segments fail, it will be substituted by the three remaining ones so there would also be no change to the flight behaviour. FlyNow has shown a second-generation full-scale eCopter take to the air untethered for the first time. Picture supplied by JLPPA
