Picture MUST credit: Heritage Auctions The cover of the comic which introduced Superman to the world has sold $408,000 USD / €347.780 euros shattering the auction record for a stand-alone cover. It was literally the back and front cover of Action Comics No. 1, missing all the pages from inside. The previous record for a loose cover was $20,000 USD / €17.050 euros. The publication, dated June but published in April 1938 by the USA's DC Comics is thought to be the first superhero comic book. It shows Superman in the front lifting a car above his head. The highest amount paid for a complete copy was $6 million USD / €5.1 million euros on April 4, 2024, when Texas auction house Heritage Auctions brokered the sale of a specimen graded 8.5 out of 10 for condition. Now Heritage, based in Dallas, has presided over the sale of just the cover from another copy. The cover image, drawn by artist Joe Shuster, has been called the most famous image in comic book history. Heritage vice president Barry Sandoval said: "If a few months ago someone had asked me to find them an attractive loose cover for Action Comics No. 1, I probably would have laughed.
