The team behind the device known as BrainGate2 says it holds promise for restoring the voices of people who have lost the ability to speak. Last year the team behind it showed off an earlier version that translated thoughts into text which a computer then read aloud with a synthesised voice. The new updated system effectively creates a digital vocal tract for talking in real time for a more natural conversation. The male study participant has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis known as ALS, which affects the nerve cells that control movement throughout the body. The disease leads to a gradual loss of the ability to stand, walk and use hands. It can also cause a person to lose control of the muscles used to speak, leading to a loss of understandable speech. The device has been developed by a US team from the Neuroprosthetics Lab at University of California, Davis Health.
