Picture MUST credit: Julien's Auctions A guitar owned by Beatle George Harrison for the band's first groundbreaking residencies in the German port of Hamburg, is expected to fetch at least $1 million at a forthcoming auction. Described as "one of the holy grails of historic Beatles guitars” the Czech-made solid body Futurama, was used on over 324 gigs by Harrison as the embryonic group became the house band at two clubs between 1960 and 1961. In 1964, at the height of Beatlemania around the world, Harrison donated the guitar to the UK's Beat Instrumental Magazine as a competition prize. The winner decided to take a cash prize rather than the guitar which then stayed with the magazine's editor Sean O'Mahony. It is tipped to exceed its estimate of $600,000-$800,000 USD / €543.650 - €724.900 euros when it comes under the hammer at US sale room Julien's Auctions in Nashville, Tennessee later this year. Until then it will be on show as part of the Beatles Story official exhibition in the band's home town of Liverpool from today until October 17th before making other stops in Europe. The guitar is a 1958 Resonet Futurama in a sunburst finish. A Julien's spokesperson said: "This Futurama was George Harrison's most-played guitar in the early days of The Beatles. "It used on over 324 Beatle performances including the band's early Cavern Club shows in Liverpool and on their legendary Hamburg dates in 1960 and 1961 . Picture supplied by JLPPA
