Pictures must credit: Chalmers University of Technology/Henrik Sandsjö A battery that could pack the chassis of an electric vehicle with energy, saving a huge amount of weight has been centred by engineers. It could also boost their range by up to 70 percent. Additionally the new structural power pack could lead to smartphones as thin as credit cards or reused to make extra lightweight laptops Electric vehicles use a bank of large lithium-ion batteries stored in the floors. Researchers at Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology wondered if they could build a battery that doubles as the load-bearing material holding the car together while shedding weight. The team developed a battery made of a carbon fibre composite which they dubbed "massless energy storage.” It would offer similar stiffness to aluminium, while also capable of storing energy. Carbon fibre is light, strong, and rigid but it can also serve as an effective electrode material when engineered for that purpose. Picture supplied by JLPPA
