Pictures MUST credit:Raytheon Two high-power systems that will use microwaves to defeat military drone threats at the speed of light are to be developed for the US navy and air force. The systems by US defence company Raytheon are designed to be rugged and transportable for front-line deployment. One is ground based and the other will be carried by aircraft. They will use high-energy beams across a wide range in the microwave band of the electromagnetic spectrum. These microwaves have the potential to confuse, disrupt and sometimes destroy a drone's electronics, sensors and communications. Drones play an increasing role in modern warfare as seen most dramatically in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Even a small hobby drone can be easily repurposed as a reconnaissance platform for artillery, or even as a way of delivering explosives with deadly precision. The threat is multiplied when they are sent out in swarms. Under the three-year, $31.3 million USD contract from the USA's Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, Raytheon will deliver prototype systems to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. Raytheon advance technology chief Colin Whelan said: "The new iterations of Raytheon's high-power microwave systems are cost-effective and reliable solutions that operate at the speed of light – enabling our warfighters to defend against faster and more manoeuvrable threats.” Tucson based Raytheon has been a leader in the use of high-power microwaves for nearly 80 years.
